VERMONT PATH

Went camping in Vermont this Columbus Day weekend. The foliage was peaking, and we walked this path in the morning after a great pancake breakfast with delicious local maple syrup! We camped on our own land, and this path was one of the boundaries.

Also at Bay Farm, there were so many really pretty cobwebs in the grasses in the field. Again, it was very early a.m., and the lighting was beautiful. I couldn't choose, so I posted all of them.

Went to Bay Farm on Saturday morning to photograph the sunrise. It was low tide, and the sunrise was beautiful. An egret stood there the whole time posing for us. After the sun comes up, it casts a beautiful orange/gold glow on the trees and rocks on the shore.

I've been in my studio a lot these days. Here are some pastels that I recently painted. I'm trying to get away from "trees" for awhile and trying something new. As you can see, I'm sort of succeeding. Out of my comfort zone has been my theme lately.

RED-TAILED HAWK

I was at the fruit stand taking pictures when my friend spotted this hawk. Just as I saw him, he took off, and I swung my camera around to catch a photo. This is the best I could do, but I like that you can still see the strength in his wings and legs, so I saved the photo.

Inspiration is flowing since a painting weekend at Wayland last October. We took so many wonderful pictures to use as references and can't stop painting from them. The feeling that we had during that weekend still exists every time I get involved in one of my paintings.

WINTRY ROADS

Don't hate me, but I love the winter! Especially after a huge snowfall. I make sure I have plenty of food, wine and wood for the fire so I can hunker down and enjoy the scenery. I grab my camera and go out for a long walk. It's so quiet with very little traffic on the roads. This week's Photo Sunday challenge is "Road", so I thought I'd begin the season early with these photos.

FALL FOLIAGE IN WAYLAND, NY

Last weekend, my two best friends and I spent a glorious weekend in Wayland, NY, at our house. We went up to paint and had a wonderful time -- good food, ample uninterrupted painting time, some wine, and beautiful walks to take pictures of the foliage. The foliage was a little past peak, but it was still magnificent when the sunlit hit it. Here are just a few of the photos that I took.

This is a pastel painting of a beautiful tree by the pond on our land in NY. The view is from the house. I love the sweeping branches of this pine and its perfect shape.

LEAF PEEPING IN NH

Yesterday, Bob and I went "leaf peeping" in NH. We traveled many country roads and ended up at Mount Sunapee, where we took the chair lift to the top of the mountain. The foliage wasn't at its peak yet, but it sure was beautiful. There was still a lot of color. Here are some pictures.

Today was a perfect day for photos. The tide was high so all the little rivers would be there along the beach road. And the sky was so very blue. I just had to go out and take pictures.

I haven't posted a painting in quite awhile. There is a beautiful spot over a bridge on the way to Scituate. When the tide is high, all the rivulets show up. When out with some friends one day on a picture-taking expedition, we got lucky and were on the bridge at high tide. This is a pastel painting of the scene before us that day. The grasses were a little wet and shimmered a bit in the sunlight.

Some friends and I went out to take pictures the other day. It was such a nice afternoon. We went to a farm stand and took lots of pictures of the fruits and vegetables. They were displayed so nicely for us.

Went on a whale watch yesterday. The weather was perfect. We saw a mother, her calf and a third whale all traveling together. We followed and watched them for quite a long time. It was wonderful!

My brother-in-law has these two adorable Westies, Mac and Duffy. They are inseparable and are looking eager to get a treat.

That's Duffy on the top. He was enjoying the view of Canandaigua Lake from the beautiful grounds at the Mees Observatory. I called his name, and he turned to look at me. I love this photo.

Last week, we vacationed at our home in NY. On the way, we stopped overnight at the Mees Observatory in Canandaigua, where there is a very large telescope. My daughter has learned to use it to give presentations and was able to reserve the house and the telescope for a night. We saw many things in the sky -- nebula, star clusters, etc. -- and were very impressed with her expertise in using the telescope. Anyway, this piano was in the house, and the morning light was illuminating it beautifully. The light coming in through the window made the exposure tricky, but I think it turned out OK.

"SHADOW" FOR PHOTO FRIDAY

While on vacation, Andy (our dog) was sitting in the shadow of the picnic bench while watching the kids play in the yard. And I really like the shadow play on the red kayak. I couldn't decide which photo to submit, so I'm submitting both. Hope that's OK.

The same day I went to Scituate. The frayed rope was taken at The Millwharf restaurant. It's part of a fence around the parking lot and always has a lot of character. I took the photo of the plant on the rocks by the Scituate lighthouse.

Photo Friday is looking for a "monochrome" photo this week. When walking through the woods where my husband grew up, we came upon this old rusted tricycle. My husband gasped and said, "I remember you!" and had no idea how the tricycle ended up there. I thought it was pretty amazing and took this photo.

YELLOW ROSES

In my watercolor class, we painted white irises. After class, I wanted to paint some more, so I stopped at the store looking for white flowers. The best I could find were these beautiful very pale yellow roses. I painted them yesterday and took photos of them today so that I can try painting them again (my first attempt was OK, but I want to do better). Anyway, I thought I'd share this photo with you. They really are so pretty.

Took a walk to the Duxbury lighthouse on this, the first 80 degree day of the season. It was so beautiful there, and the walk along the beach was delightful. To get to the lighthouse, we had to go through the Gurnet, a private community. We had to park outside and walk in to the lighthouse. Everyone was opening their houses up for the season, and there were some really nice gardens.

On the same day that I took all the daffodil photos, I also braved the winds and went to the beach. I started taking a watercolor class recently, and we did a lesson on dunes. I realized that I needed some new photo references, so off I went to the beach.

I grabbed my camera last week on a beautiful, but windy, day. I wanted to see if the daffodils along the fence at the golf course were in bloom yet. Although not all of them had bloomed yet, many had and were at their peak of beauty. I took many, many photos of them. Here are a couple of them.

Here is a photo of my dog when he was just a puppy. Andy is a mini long-haired dachshund who has brought us 8 years of amusement. He is the perfect family dog. Isn't he cute?

This dune fence has seen better days. There is still something beautifully peaceful about the fences, even when they are in a deteriorating state. It has probably been repaired by now. I took this photo last summer.

Bob and I went for a very nice walk at the Norris Reservation in Norwell. This is a view of the North River taken through the window of some kind of empty house, perhaps a boat house.

Can you believe the perfect shape of this tree, which can be seen from Powder Point Avenue. It stands alone and, although beautiful in the spring and summer, it is most noticeable when all the leaves have fallen, revealing its shape. It think it's a tulip tree.

It's been a long, cold winter. I was looking over my photographs and came across these two guys (thinking of summer). I just love seagulls. They have such attitude. Each one has its own personality, and they love to keep lookout over their world. These photos were taken at one of my favorite restaurants -- The Millwharf in Scituate, Mass. They have an outside patio where I like to dine with friends, always with my camera by my side.

We've had a lot of snow this winter. After the last storm, each and every twig on every tree had snow on it. It was a "winter wonderland" everywhere you looked. Here are two trees that I particularly liked, one being the Winter Street tree that I always go back to for photos.

WOMEN'S WEEKEND IN WAYLAND

Two of my friends and I spent last weekend in Wayland, NY, at our home there. We went to paint, but the weather was pretty gray and misty, so we had to paint from photos. We went for a walk to the top of the hill to the potato farm, took photos, painted, had a campfire, and talked and talked and talked. We had a wonderful time. Here are some photos that I took there.

I don't remember where I took this picture of this tree trunk. I think it's a sycamore. I liked the way the bark peeled away from the trunk revealing all the layers and colors of the tree.

We had a huge bonfire on the 4th of July. You can see how large the fire was compared to its audience. That is also the crescent moon in the sky.

Here is a picture of the bat house and a bat that has left it. It's funny how the bats just fall out of the bottom and then fly away. And it's amazing how many bats are in that little house. We counted over 60 bats that night.

My brother-in-law built a bat house on our land in NY and every evening likes to sit and count how many bats fall out of the house. This July 4th, the bats had an audience of about 15. I tried, without much success, to take a good picture of one of the bats. What I did get was this nice photo of the moon and the bat house.

This year, my peonies are so beautiful. In spite of their size and weight, they are still very delicate. I had to stake them up because they were so tall and the flowers were so heavy that they were leaning over almost to the ground.

We have a campfire every night at our country house in western NY. There is always someone who wants to poke at the fire, while the rest of us just stare at it and have wonderful conversations. It's a great way to end a long day.

Yesterday morning I took these photos of the swans and their babies in my friend's backyard pond. She threw a little bread in the water, and they came right over and posed for pictures for at least an hour. I have many other beautiful photos, but I wanted to show you these cute little swans, and these were the best shots to do just that. I tried to use a tripod to get better focus, but they were moving around too much, so I had to abandon that idea and shoot hand-held photos.

Normally, I have a black thumb when it comes to flowers, but my African Violets must be in just the right place in my home. They really seem to thrive, and this one is my favorite. When it blooms, there are so many flowers, and it is really dense. They last a long time, too.

Today I began trying to photograph flowers against a black background. I used aperture-priority with a shallow depth of field. These tulips are the photo that I liked the best. Some of the others had focusing problems. But, I'll keep trying.

The photo for the pastel painting of this tree was taken at World's End in Hingham, MA just after sunrise. The backlighting was beautiful, and I loved the colors in the trees in the background. I'll have to arise very early more often. The lighting is fantastic for photography.

We went to our country house in Wayland, NY for Thanksgiving with our family. There were 19 of us, and we had a wonderful time. We went for lots of walks, the first of which was as soon as we arrived. It was kind of misty and foggy, and I got some interesting photos. The golden trees are larches. They added some beautiful color on a gray day. Then it snowed on Thanksgiving, and I was able to get some more nice shots.

I was walking on the beach this day and was very lucky to catch this seagull in flight. It was a fantastic moment. I just knew I had gotten a good photo, even though it's slightly out of focus. Oh, well.

This is a pastel painting I just finished of the Powder Point Bridge, a long wooden bridge that crosses Duxbury Bay to the ocean. The photo was taken very early in the morning so that I could capture this view with no cars. The lighting was beautiful -- I couldn't resist.

We had dinner on the beach the other night, and the sunset was beautiful. I brought my camera and tripod to take some photos. The scene of the dunes taken from the beach was really pretty, but I was really excited about the sunset over the bay taken from atop the first crossover. I took a photo workshop class that had me awake at 3 a.m. to go to World's End to shoot the sunrise. At first I though I was crazy, but once there I was ready for action. It was a wonderful experience being out at that hour of the morning. I must say it was a first.

Went to Plymouth last evening and took this photo of the bridge that connects to the long stone jetty that sticks out into Plymouth Harbor. It's a very nice walk after dinner at The Lobster Hut. That is Clark's Island and Bug Light in the distance.

This dock is on our land in upstate New York. All the young cousins love to catch sunfish off this dock. They are instantly gratified because the fish just about jump right out of the water and go for their bait. The fish are always thrown back in the water. It can entertain the children for hours on end.

I took a walk one day from Duxbury Beach down to the Marshfield end during the off-season. It was a very dark and ominous day -- great for photo taking. I shot many photos, one of which this painting is based on.

When I took my daughter to visit colleges, one of the places we went to was Princeton Universitiy. On their campus was this sculpture with fruit and flaking green paint. I took a close-up photo of it and decided to give it whirl with the pastels. I think it's interesting, maybe not frameable, but interesting. It was a lot of fun because I just got to play with the colors.

Maybe if we think spring, it will actually happen! Soon would be nice. I took this photo in upstate New York last summer when we were there for a wedding. This is the kind of sky that makes me feel good and want to be outside -- with my camera, of course.

I'm playing with my new digital SLR camera and took this photo of a quilt that I made years ago. I haven't quilted since I took up photography, but I do miss it. There just aren't enough hours in my days! Sigh.
